Beyond Sightseeing
Discover the real Ishigaki & Yaeyama
Introduction
Yasuyuki Hazama
Local Cultural Interpreter & Guide
Born and raised on Ishigaki Island, I have spent more than 24 years working within the local government, involved in urban planning, tourism, agriculture, and community development.
Through those experiences—and through everyday life on the island—I came to understand that Ishigaki and Yaeyama cannot truly be understood through sightseeing alone. Behind the beautiful landscapes are layers of history, culture, migration, trade, and the realities of island life that continue to shape this place today.
Today, my wife and I run a small subtropical farm and a farm-to-table Thai restaurant, welcoming guests into a way of life deeply connected to the rhythms of Yaeyama.
As a bilingual licensed guide, I now share these islands through a more personal and thoughtful perspective—one shaped not only by professional experience, but by a lifetime of living here.
My experiences are designed for travelers who wish to go beyond surface-level tourism and engage more deeply with the culture, history, and everyday life of Ishigaki and Yaeyama.
If that is the kind of journey you are seeking, I would be honored to welcome you.
Yaeyama Insight
For your deeper understanding
Yaeyama Insight is not a typical sightseeing guide or activity tour.
It is a small cultural project that shares not only the beauty of Ishigaki and Yaeyama, but also the deeper history, culture, daily life, and ongoing changes shaping these islands — from the perspective of someone born and raised here.
Rather than simply taking visitors to famous spots, the experience is designed to explore a deeper question together:
“What makes this place the way it is?”
Through conversation, observation, and shared experiences, guests are invited to engage with the island beyond surface-level tourism.
Nature, local communities, agriculture, tourism, migration, and island society — these are all part of the story.
This is not tourism focused on efficiency or consumption, but a quieter way of experiencing place and connection.
Yaeyama Insight hopes to serve as a doorway into that experience.
